Yacht Crew Adventures Ashore in the British Virgin Islands

What?? Biras Creek Resort in Virgin Gorda has horses??

Continuing our adventures ashore, we were surprised to spy paddocks while looking down across the island from our second hike across the top of the hill. Before becoming a sailor, Capt. Randy owned five horses at our home in Franklin, Tennessee! Naturally, we had to check it out!
Immediately, we ran into Khemraj Tillack, Biras Creek’s Horse Trainer. Khemraj learned about horses from spending his nights as a Cattle Ranger on Guyana, located in South America. Working from sun down to sun up on a Sugar Plantation for three years, Kemraj, on horseback, steered cattle away from sugar crops.
Relocating to Virgin Gorda a few years ago, Khemraj took a break from horses, but when offered the opportunity to return to horse training, he immediately jumped at the chance. “My true passion is for horses. I love the bond of mutual trust you build with them,” he says.
Joining the Biras team in February 2009, Khemraj now spends his days with Ben, Sorbeto, Kid, Winston, and Fugitive in the Biras Creek pasture, Paso Finio horses, located near the Salt Pond.  His days are a busy mixture of feeding, training, and building trust with the horses. Brought to the island from Puerto Rico by Biras owners Pam & David Johnson, a few of the horses have been rescued from abusive owners and are recovering positively with the loving care of the trainer.
Likening his horse training to “raising children,” Khemraj is similar to a proud father.  If you ask him his favorite horse, he will probably tell you he doesn’t have one, even if he’s a little partial towards Ben! (We were too!)
The next time you are in the North Sound in Virgin Gorda, make sure you go over to Biras Creek Resort and say 'Hi to our new horse friends. Kehmraj's love for his job is much like ours...happily contagious!

Taking Ourselves Out on a Sailing Charter Vacation!

After 14 years of being actively employed in the charter yacht industry, we just experienced something that we've never done. We took ourselves out on charter! Yes, that's right. Yacht Three Moons has sailed all the way from Ft. Lauderdale to Trinidad over the years; but never just the two of us.

Necker Island, BVI
Wow! All we can say...that WAS amazing! It's no wonder our charter guests come back year after year. Chartering a private yacht is fun! We banned ourselves from thinking about "to-do boat projects" and woke up each morning with an excited sense of, "Where are we going to sail & what new experience will today bring"?

Our first stop after a lovely morning of perfect sailing, was North Sound, Virgin Gorda. On our bucket list, was finally having time hike the island. We've actually never hiked the area at the Bitter End Yacht Club. The views were spectacular and we worked up an appetite that was cured by a fabulous Chicken Roti at the Fat Virgin Cafe. Our afternoon was spent touring in the dinghy around Richard Branson's Necker Island. (Which by the way, is $54,500.00 per night for a group of 28!)

Saba Rock Resort, BVI
The next big discovery was the tiny beach at Saba Rock Resort. Rarely used by tourists, it was the perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail in a hammock. Click here to check out their webcam! Our day was topped off with a superb "dress-up" dinner at Biras Creek Resort. Yes, we've had dinner there with our guests over the years; but not often and never just the two of us!

There's much more to tell about our experience; but it should be told little by little and savored, just like a great meal. Check out our links to the places we visited and stay tuned for more great sailing experiences....
